Achievements

We enhanced the onboarding process for The MeatStick App due to numerous user complaints about the first steps in using both the physical product and accompanying mobile app.

The MeatStick App is paired with a thermometer, which relays real-time data to a mobile device.

  • We designed an onboarding experience that helps customers setup their products so they can get to cooking quickly.
  • Provided a step-by-step instructional walkthrough for customers.
  • Enhanced visual cohesiveness with brand elements that are utilized on other digital mediums.
OUR WHY

A smooth and easy onboarding experience not only introduces the product effectively but also enhances the chances of our product consistently supporting users in all their future cooking endeavors.

Why will a customer love a quality onboarding experience?

This is an exciting moment for our customer! We aim to maintain that excitement by providing a thrilling experience when they first use our mobile app, ensuring they feel supported with precise temperatures and real-time data for all their cooking.

How might we

Highlight Product Value

Keep the excitement alive and present all the key features that make The MeatStick as great as it is.

Engage & Empower

Keep the customer engaged with interactive steps and instruction to improve product knowledge and understanding.

Visual Instruction

Users are all about visual education, so emphasizing visual elements can help identify and understand the product much more.

Challenges

We needed to understand "Why" the onboarding experience wasn't currently working, so we set out to gather all the insights we could.

Product audit

We set out to analyze the mobile app and conduct a heuristic analysis to uncover any usability issues.

Competitive Analysis

The MeatStick is a unique product in a small market with limited competition. However, one competitor to consider is MEATER. We were interested in learning about how MEATER approaches their onboarding process and their ways of communicating verbally and visually.

User Survey

We discovered many ways to improve the mobile app after analyzing both the existing user experience and our competitors. Giving priority to these findings would allow us to make impactful decisions.

Affinity Mapping

After gathering our data, we were able to group common findings and prioritize the items we felt would make the most impact to our onboarding redesign.

UX Treatment

Our data and insights gave us all the information needed to make great design decisions.

Wireflows

I visualized how users go through the initial setup of the app, which resulted in 3 phases: Setup the App, Setup The MeatStick, and Learn how to use both together.

UI Direction

We had many styling choices for The MeatStick brand, but we wanted to pick elements that really show the brand's identity and improve consistency across digital platforms.

Usability Testing

I conducted usability testing with 5 people to assess our ideas and gather useful insights.

Outcomes

After receiving and incorporating feedback from user testing, I firmly believe that the redesign satisfied both the business and user requirements. Detailed mock-ups were shared with The MeatStick team, who would then pass them on to their developer.

Highlighting product value.

Highlighting the benefits upfront, creating excitement from the jump.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough (Chunking).

Simplified the setup process with easy and digestible steps.

Connecting the devices (Physical product and mobile application).

Filling the knowledge gap between the two devices (in-app and physical thermometer).
